Does my child need braces or expansion first?

Learn when children may need jaw development or expansion evaluated before traditional braces.

Parents are often told their child needs braces, but that is not always the whole answer. If the jaws are too narrow or underdeveloped, creating room may need to be considered before or alongside tooth alignment.

The short answer

Some children need more than braces. If the problem is lack of jaw width or poor development, expansion or growth-focused treatment may need to be considered before final alignment.

Why it happens

  • Braces move teeth, but they do not automatically create healthy jaw development.
  • A child may have a skeletal problem, not just a dental one.

Why it matters

Lining teeth up inside a small jaw may not address tongue space, breathing, or long-term stability.

What most people miss

The real question is not only whether teeth are crooked, but why there is not enough room.

What to do next

Ask whether your child has enough jaw width, enough tongue space, and normal breathing function.
